    MHD Waves and Coronal Seismology: an overview of recent results

    Recent observations have revealed that MHD waves and oscillations are ubiquitous in the solar atmosphere, with a wide range of periods. We give a brief review of some aspects of MHD waves and coronal seismology which have recently been the focus of intense debate or are newly emerging. In particular, we focus on four topics: (i) the current controversy surrounding propagating intensity perturbations along coronal loops, (ii) the interpretation of propagating transverse loop oscillations, (iii) the ongoing search for coronal (torsional) Alfven waves and (iv) the rapidly developing topic of quasi-periodic pulsations (QPP) in solar flares

    A small and light weight heat exchanger for on-board helium refrigerator

    A small and light weight heat exchanger used for small helium refrigerator has been developed by Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd. This heat exchanger is a laminated metal heat exchanger which consists of perforated aluminum metal plates and glassfiber reinforced plastic separators. The size is from 100 mm to 28 mm in diameter and about 300 mm in length. The weight is from 2.5 kg to 0.6 kg. Also it can be used between room temperature and liquid helium temperature. The thermal efficiency obtained has been more than 96%. The heat exchanger has been practically used for on-board helium refrigerator in Japanese National Railways' superconducting magnetic levitated trains

    Canonical Theory of 2+1 Gravity

    Recently 2+1 dimensional gravity theory, especially AdS3{\rm AdS_3} has been studied extensively. It was shown to be equivalent to the 2+1 Chern-Simon theory and has been investigated to understand the black hole thermodynamics, i.e. Hawking temperature and others. The purpose of this report is to investigate the canonical formalism of the original 2+1 Einstein gravity theory instead of the Chern-Simon theory. For the spherically symmetric space-time, local conserved quantities(local mass and angular momentum) are introduced and using them canonical quantum theory is defined. Constraints are imposed on state vectors and solved analytically.     On the Superradiance of Spin-1 Waves in an Equatorial Wedge around a Kerr Hole

    Recently Van Putten has suggested that superradiance of magnetosonic waves in a toroidal magnetosphere around a Kerr black hole may play a role in the central engine of gamma-ray bursts. In this context, he computed (in the WKB approximation) the superradiant amplification of scalar waves confined to a thin equatorial wedge around a Kerr hole and found that the superradiance is higher than for radiation incident over all angles. This paper presents calculations of both spin-0 (scalar) superradiance (integrating the radial equation rather than using the WKB method) and and spin-1 (electromagnetic/magnetosonic) superradiance, in Van Putten's wedge geometry. In contrast to the scalar case, spin-1 superradiance decreases in the wedge geometry, decreasing the likelihood of its astrophysical importance.Comment: Submitted to The Astrophysical Journal Letter

    Effect of disorder outside the CuO2_{2} planes on TcT_{c} of copper oxide superconductors

    The effect of disorder on the superconducting transition temperature TcT_{c} of cuprate superconductors is examined. Disorder is introduced into the cation sites in the plane adjacent to the CuO2_{2} planes of two single-layer systems, Bi2.0_{2.0}Sr1.6_{1.6}Ln0.4_{0.4}CuO6+δ_{6+\delta} and La1.85−y_{1.85-y}Ndy_{y}Sr0.15_{0.15}CuO4_{4}. Disorder is controlled by changing rare earth (Ln) ions with different ionic radius in the former, and by varying the Nd content in the latter with the doped carrier density kept constant. We show that this type of disorder works as weak scatterers in contrast to the in-plane disorder produced by Zn, but remarkably reduces TcT_{c} suggesting novel effects of disorder on high-TcT_{c} superconductivity.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, to be published in Phys.
